No decision on quarantine yet, says Health Department

There is no decision yet by the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee to quarantine any affected areas following the rabies outbreak in the state.

“Regarding the action of quarantine of the affected areas, there is no decision yet by the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee,” the state Health Department told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

The department was asked on the implication from the medical perspective, if a quarantine order is to be enforced on the villages and areas affected.

On Sunday, Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said several areas in Sarawak are expected to be quarantined following the outbreak of rabies, especially in Serian.

However, he said the quarantine would not involve the entire district because it might affect the socio-economic status of the people in the respective districts.

“The quarantine will be enforced if the situation becomes serious but at the same time, the pros and cons must be looked at before such an action is taken.

“The Sarawak Veterinary Services Department is taking various steps to curb the spread of the virus,” Tajuddin was quoted as saying.
