Take extra care on your journey, travellers told

Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat has advised those travelling by land or river to their homes or elsewhere to exercise extra care during the journey.

He said he had observed that each year during the Gawai Dayak celebration, thousands of people return to their longhouses in Kapit and since a week ago there was a large number of express boat passengers from Sibu to Kapit.

“My main concern is safety on the journey. By boat or vehicle, prioritise safety. If by river then use life jacket. If by road, check your vehicle to make sure it is on tip top condition to reach home safely,” said Jamit when contacted.

He was deeply saddened to hear that a porter fell into the river at Kapit terminal on Sunday afternoon, prompting a search and rescue operation that had failed to locate him until yesterday.

In view of the congestion at Kapit Terminal, where express boats are tied to one another, Jamit advised passengers to be careful while embarking or disembarking. He appealed to porters not to rush for luggage but instead should wait till all passengers have disembarked from the arriving boats.

He called on the enforcement agency to act stringently to ensure all safety measures are complied with.
